Amaurea news

This next month is a busy one for Amaurea. We have three new books coming out in quick succession, each very distinctive.

Jean Stubbs, 'Tobacco Counterpoints'

First up is Tobacco Counterpoints: Cuba and the Global Habano, by Jean Stubbs (whose Tobacco on the Periphery we published a new revised edition of last year). This is a collection of the tobacco-history articles written and published by Jean over the past 40 years. A truly impressive retrospective, that not only shows how her work has developed – but amply demonstrates her importance and influence in the study of tobacco history. And particularly that iconic luxury commodity – the Cuban cigar. The book will published on 17th October, and is already available for pre-orders.

Then on 7th November, we are publishing a collection of photographs of jazz performers and performances taken at the Havana Jazz Plaza Festival over the years – by seven photographers (Abel Carmenate, Xavier Carvajal, Maité Fernández, Elio Miniello, Enrique ‘Kike’ Smith, Gonzalo Vidal and Jorge Villa).

Jazz Habana cover

This vibrant display coincides with a collective exhibition of their work in Havana’s Museo de Bellas Artes this November. The book itself, which is coming out in time for the London Jazz Festival, will be launched as part of this January’s edition of Jazz Plaza in Havana.

Lisa St Aubin de Terán, 'The Hobby', cover

And on 21st November, we will be releasing the long-awaited new novel from Lisa St Aubin de Terán – The Hobby. A shocking and gripping psychological crime thriller, inspired by the real life stories of paedophile conspiracies and child abuse cases that have been uncovered in recent years. Never flinching from the realities of child abuse and associated crimes, the story ranges from the fan club of a 1940s child star, through Istanbul and war-torn Burma and Cairo, and ultimately to 1980s Britain – in which the police detectives, Custer and Jolly, seek to bring justice, while themselves going through their own quest for personal redemption.
